Why is Sun Safety Important?

The sun gives us light, warmth, and helps our bodies make Vitamin D. But too much sun can hurt our skin. It's like eating ice cream - a little is yummy, but too much can give you a tummy ache!

Fun Fact: Did you know that your skin remembers every sunburn you get? That's why it's super important to protect your skin from an early age!

Understanding UV Rays

The sun sends out invisible rays called Ultraviolet (UV) rays. There are two types we need to watch out for:

UVA rays: These can make your skin age faster and cause wrinkles.

UVB rays: These are the main cause of sunburns.

Both types can damage your skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Check the UV Index The UV Index tells us how strong the sun's rays are. The higher the number, the more careful we need to be!

Sunscreen 101

Sunscreen is like a force field for your skin. Here's how to use it:

  1. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside
  2. Use enough to cover all exposed skin (about a shot glass full for your whole body)
  3. Don't forget often-missed spots like ears, feet, and the back of your neck
  4. Reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming or sweating

Fun Fact: The first sunscreen was invented in 1938 by a chemist named Franz Greiter after he got sunburned while climbing a mountain!

What to Do If You Get Sunburned

Ouch! If you do get sunburned, here's what to do:

  1. Get out of the sun right away
  2. Take a cool bath or apply cool, damp towels to your skin
  3. Use aloe vera gel to soothe your skin
  4. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
  5. Tell a grown-up if your sunburn is very painful or if you feel sick
